This chart shows the number of posts from the main search query that mention specific payment methods and the % of conversations related to each method. Shares/RT are included.

Takeaways

  • August – September recorded a 97% surge in conversations about Payment Methods compared to May – June. This growth was mainly driven by mentions of online bank transfers, which grew to 58% of all Payment Method conversations, a sharp increase compared to a 29% share in the previous reporting period.

  • The online bank transfer conversation highlighted increased fraudulent schemes, such as impersonating bank staff. It proposed solutions for protecting consumers from online scams, such as using the media to raise awareness of online safety. People reacted to these reports and advised on how to better protect against fraudsters, for example, by avoiding suspicious Android Package Kit (APK) files on Android. Those files have been used to install mobile apps on Android phones, and scammers have used them to distribute malware.

  • Consumers turned to news stations for information about fraud cases in Vietnam and demanded more action from banks. A news report shared a scam victim's experience using a fraudulent money-transfer app. A user also suggested implementing refund policies in cases involving employee misconduct.

  • Credit cards were the second most mentioned payment method, comprising 23% of social conversation in August – September. In particular, credit card debt repayment scams were widely discussed. Under the promise of a low fee, scammers would offer to repay a victim’s credit card debt. In the process, they would get a hold of personal information such as card details and data documents. Another common scam was scammers posing as bank representatives. In one scheme involving the impersonation of bank employees, the perpetrators promised free withdrawals, leading to more than 7,000 people being defrauded.
